Hello

Welcome to my page. My name is Samail Akhtar and I am thrilled to have you visit my page. Your readiness to embark on this journey is commendable and I would be honored to accompany you every step of the way.

My Story

My experience witnessing therapy's transformative power continues to ignite my desire to support others on their personal paths of growth and healing.

I am here to explore life complexities alongside you and help rebuild in a manner that nurtures your personal growth. Supporting you through life challenges, joys, and transitions is a privilege I deeply value as a therapist.

Born and raised in India, I saw the stigma attached to mental health and have been on a quest to break down the shame. Moving countries during the pandemic taught me the importance of perspective, patience, and support for individuals with mental health concerns. The opportunity to practice in Mumbai, Kentucky, and New Jersey has afforded me extensive experience working with individuals from various backgrounds, perspectives, walks of life, and levels of care.

My educational journey is equally diverse and extensive. I pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Jai Hind College in Mumbai, India and a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Specializing in rehabilitation counseling honed my career counseling abilities and taught me how to assist individuals in reintegrating into society following various challenges. I am a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) in New Jersey and a National Certified Counselor (NCC) by the National Board of Certified Counselors, an independent international certification organization for professional counselors.

I use various strategies, tools, and techniques from different theoretical lenses in my therapeutic sessions with clients. These include cognitive behavioral therapy, helping clients gain perspective and identify and reframe thought patterns; motivational interviewing, helping clients identify strengths and work through different stages of change; dialectical behavioral therapy, helping clients gain insight and acceptance towards the gray areas in life; mindfulness-based practices, helping clients remain grounded through the deep work of healing; and many other evidence-based practices.

I have experience across different populations, including adolescent and adult clients facing mental health and addiction challenges, while also providing individual, group, couple, and family therapy in multiple program settings. These settings include Peer-Support programs, Community Mental Health Centers, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and Outpatient Programs (OP).

My extensive education and diverse experience spanning various cultures, environments, and populations have significantly enriched my therapeutic facilitation. I have learned the vital role of collaboration and commitment in therapeutic relationships and look forward to working with you to foster the best version of you!
